Artist Update: Vicci Martinez

The VoiceVicci Martinez is still enjoying a newfound career success almost two years after she was a finalist on the first season of The Voice. Though the Seattle native was a talented musician well before the NBC series came into her life, the TV show vaulted her into the national spotlight, and Vicci has made the most of it. Universal Music Group, the record label affiliated with The Voice, offered her a deal after the show. She subsequently released her self-titled album, and now you can see the music video for the album’s first single, “Come Along.”

Big Red Chairs caught up with Vicci the day after she shot the “Come Along” video to look back on her album and talk about the journey she’s taken since we all fell in love with her voice.

The video for “Come Along” arrives ten months after the release of the album on which the song appears, but Vicci believes that the delay actually worked in her favor. “I was supposed to do a video this time last year and I think what happened was, the label was going to give me a chance to develop a little and see how the song and the record were going to go. But I’m really happy that it happened that way,” she explained. “It’s been a really busy year, but with a lot of evolution as far as me and this album, and playing it live and being able to have a relationship with these songs. Normally I write songs and I’ve been playing them for awhile and then I make an album. This is the opposite.”

“We’ve been visiting a lot of radio stations and the song has been going up on the charts the last few months,” she continued. “I’ve been really seeing a lot of success in actually going to stations and making relationships with people. I’m actually hoping I can do more of that. Just kind of having that one-on-one with the stations and the people. It’s kind of them taking a risk on me, adding the song to their playlist, because I’m a developing artist.”

It’s been a longer road for Vicci than many of the Voice artists who have followed her. She was the last finalist from season one to release an album, and of the four performers from that first cycle who were signed to Universal, she’s one of only two still with the label (the other being runner-up Dia Frampton). As so much of the post-reality show business now seems to rest on how quickly an artist can get material out before the next one takes their place in the public eye, Vicci is a breath of fresh air, a true artist whose primary concern is always for her work.

“I’m really happy,” she said about the trajectory of her career. “At first, everything was happening so quickly. I kind of thought, are they just going to drop me and forget about me, knowing that Javier [Colon] wasn’t with the label anymore [and] I think they let go of Xenia. I was like, ‘I haven’t even been released yet and it seems like they’re getting rid of people.’ Then they just kind of slowed it down. They didn’t put [the album] out in stores. I was like, ‘Oh my God, what am I supposed to do?’ I’m supposed to be with this major label [and] that’s why you sign with a label.

“My manager, Beth [Tallman], who’s just so wonderful, said, ‘Let’s go to the radio stations on our own and just go do it.’ And because of that and the song doing well, now the album’s in stores and now I’m doing the video,” she continued. “It’s been very humbling and it’s been very great to go through that process of starting from square one again. Really making the label recognize me as a real artist, it’s made it more rewarding.”

Where other artists might have expected more stardom after being a finalist on a hugely popular show, having been a working musician before TV came calling, Vicci is firmly down to earth. “I even had a line in one of my songs that says ‘Let go of all of your expectations,’ because you never know what’s going to happen,” she said, looking back at her experience on The Voice. “Adam Levine’s manager even took me aside once, and he was like ‘These shows are so unnatural for an artist. This is not how it happens. With Maroon 5, it took us being on the road for two years to get the songs to start charting.’ That’s the way it happens for everybody else. To expect everything to move that quickly, it’s just not natural. To have [the label] slow down and to have all these speed bumps come along the way, I think I needed to go through that. It was good for me to really just plant my feet again.”

While she still cherishes the time she spent as a member of Team Cee Lo Green, Vicci explained that she also wants to continue with a career that stands on its own, too. “I definitely am great friends with the people, the crew and the staff on The Voice, anything they’ve needed from me or anything I’ve needed from them. They’ve been so great. If they ask me to do anything I’m happy to do so,” said Vicci, who returned to the show in season two along with the three other first-season finalists. “But I think I’ve kind of gone through the trenches in the last couple years of kind of proving myself, not only to a new audience but also to my label. I feel like I have become a priority for them because I’ve shown that ‘Hey, you can’t get rid of me. I’m going to do my work here and I’m not going to just lean on The Voice to get any success.’ I’m in it for the long haul.”

“I don’t talk to Cee Lo anymore,” she continued. “I know I can lean on him if I need to talk to him, but he’s busy. It was great [working with him], and he did help get me out there and he sang on the record, but he’s not in this video. This was a song I chose and I invited him to be a part of the song. It wasn’t him pushing me toward doing this. This came from me. It was me choosing the song to be the single and now it’s working in my favor.”

If you see Vicci back on The Voice again, it might be in one of those big red chairs. “I always felt like I could somehow maybe be a coach one day,” she added. “But I think it takes going through the hard knocks to be able to come onto a show like that and really have advice to give and coaching to give. I don’t think I’m there yet.”

Right now, she’s hoping to get on a summer tour and planning to put more time into Vicci, including a potential second music video, before she gives any thought to a next album. When she does finally stop and look back, what’s going to make her think this whole journey from music to reality TV and back again has been worth it? “I think for me it’s just making sure that I continue to have good intention in my music, which has always been to inspire people to do what they love – any kind of art, anything that makes you feel passion and freedom in your work, in your craft, in your life,” she said. “That’s the biggest thing for me. That doesn’t just come through music. It also comes through action and your way of life. I have to make sure I’m living by those words as well. To me, that’s a success story.”

You can watch the video for “Come Along” on VEVO below. You can also keep up with Vicci by visiting her official website and following her on Twitter (@VicciMartinez).

Blake Shelton & 6 Other ‘The Voice’ Artists With New Releases

Blake Shelton

The Voice coach Blake Shelton releases his new album Based on a True Story today (and if you haven’t ordered your copy yet, you can do so here), but he’s not the only one from the show who’s put new music out recently. Here are a half-dozen other artists you know from the show who have turned out fresh albums or EP’s in the last few months.

Tje Austin, Dreamin’ Big (get it HERE): A member of Team Cee Lo in Season 1, this soulful singer returns with a CD he’s been working on for some time, and that extra time and effort shows in a pleasant R&B collection that ranges from the heartbreakingly touching (earlier single “Right For You”) to the more uptempo (“Not A Thug”) and the slow jams (“Back 2 Me”). He’s not necessarily upending the genre, but he doesn’t need to; he’s got a voice that practically melts in your ears. For those of you who need something smooth to relax with, this is the album you want to add to your collection.

Tim Mahoney Band, Shine Through (get it HERE): Tim Mahoney was responsible for one of The Voice‘s first-ever memorable moments, when coach Adam Levine mistook him for a woman during his blind audition in Season 1. His unique voice didn’t get the appreciation it deserved on the show, but Tim has continued to deliver solid, enjoyable rock ever since, and this new album is more of the same. Whether it’s the earnest title track or the simple and painful “It’s Over,” his album is perfect for those who love a good singer-songwriter without a lot of fanfare. This album also includes his Voice-inspired single, “Hey Adam Levine.”

Nakia, Drown in the Crimson Tide (get it HERE): The semifinalist for Team Cee Lo during Season 1 (who competed with Tje Austin during the battle rounds), Nakia is more than doing his part to keep the blues genre in the public music consciousness. Whether it’s the uplifting “Dream Big” or something like “Pieces and Castles,” this six-song EP from the Texan has plenty of soul and a certain funky element to top it all off. This is music from an artist who’s secure in his sound, and while it may not be for everyone, those who want something different than the usual pop and rock will enjoy this one.

Pip, No Formalities (get it HERE): A fan favorite during Season 2, Pip has definitely found his groove with this six-song EP, which comes off confident and catchy. Danceable beats mix with memorable choruses and Pip’s refreshingly clear vocals to create songs that will roll around in your head for hours afterward. This is a wonderful debut release that’s purely good, clean fun, and establishes exactly what sound fans can expect from Pip in the future. It includes his first post-Voice single, “Who Cares.” If there’s any issue with No Formalities, it’s that it leaves you wanting more. Of all the recent releases from Voice artists, this is the strongest.

Casey Weston, Find the Moon (get it HERE): Team Adam’s Season 1 semifinalist has put out her first new material since appearing on the show, and while you’d probably still call her a country artist, there’s a surprising amount of range on this new CD. This is the Casey Weston album we’ve all been waiting for. The distinct twang to Casey’s voice is put to good use across the board, but it’s the songs that change, with tracks like “Into Your Heart” having more of a pop-rock edge while others such as “Like You” stay closer to country. What’s most remarkable about Find the Moon is that you can hear the added maturity, both in Casey’s voice and in her lyrics, compared to her self-titled release from two years ago. You can also read the BFTV interview with Casey Weston here.

Kim Yarbrough, Brand New Day (get it HERE): The Team Adam singer with the powerful voice from Season 2 has mostly been busy on stage and screen (did you see her on TNT’s Southland earlier this month?), but has just released her new CD-single. If you didn’t figure it out from her performances on the show, Kim can blow the doors off with the strength of her voice, and “Brand New Day” is an anthem reminiscent of power-pop singers like Kristine W. The original version runs a bit long, and it’s a little bummer that the album is comprised of remixes of one tune, but that one tune proves that a full album from Kim will definitely be intriguing.

The Voice continues tonight at 8 PM ET/PT on NBC.

Countdown to ‘The Voice’ Season 4: What Have You Missed?

The Voice - Season 3We’re just shy of a month from a brand-new season of NBC’s The Voice, and only about two months removed from America crowning Team Blake’s Cassadee Pope the winner of the show’s third cycle. What’s been happening with the show and its artists since Cassadee won the title?

As has been heavily publicized, Season 4 will be the first with new coaches Shakira and Usher, who were introduced in the fall. You can read some of their early thoughts on joining The Voice here. This may also be the only season for the new arrivals, as previous coaches Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green – who are on a break this time around – have expressed interest in returning for Season 5 this fall. However, it’s worth noting that nothing has been finalized yet beyond Season 4.

The guest mentors this year will be Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum (Team Adam), Sheryl Crow (Team Blake), Joel Madden (Team Shakira) and Pharrell Williams (Team Usher).

Season 3 winner Cassadee Pope officially signed her recording deal with Universal and has been hard at work writing and recording ever since, according to her Facebook. Universal released a CD version of her Voice performances here. Cassadee posted a video update on her progress here.

Runner-up Terry McDermott hasn’t slowed down since leaving the show, either. In fact, he recently released a new single “Pictures” via SoundCloud, which he co-wrote with Dave Burman. His performance of “Baby, I Love Your Way” with Peter Frampton from the Voice finale was retroactively released on iTunes here.

Here’s a short list of major developments with other Voice artists, past and present.

Team Adam: Season 3′s Amanda Brown appears on the soundtrack to the recent Universal release Identity Thief, starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. Her teammate Bryan Keith brought some new music to his live show at the Gramercy Theater; you can watch the video here. Season 2′s Pip released his EP No Formalities; you can get it here. Tony Lucca is hard at work on his new album, and performing some new originals on the road, like “Reckless Love.” Kim Yarbrough is preparing for the release of her single “Brand New Day” (here’s a teaser video), guested on CBS’s Vegas, appears in the March 6 episode of TNT’s Southland, and her Nickelodeon project has been ordered to series. Katrina Parker is working on new music of her own after the successful funding of her Kickstarter project. Season 1′s Tim Mahoney released his next CD, Shine Through, which includes his Voice-related tune “Hey Adam Levine.” Casey Weston has a new album on the way; you can pre-order it here and stay tuned for an upcoming interview.

Team Blake: Season 3′s Suzanna Choffel released her new single “Guardians.” Season 2′s winner, Jermaine Paul, postponed the release of his post-show album Finally until sometime later this year; you can pre-order it at Amazon, although there’s no specific street date listed there. Season 2 alum Jordis Unga is in the home stretch of putting together her new album, and also won a Grammy this year for her work on Jimmy Cliff’s Rebirth, which took the trophy for Best Reggae Album. Erin Willett has recently posted a new cover.

Team Cee Lo: Season 3′s MacKenzie Bourg has dropped his debut single. Season 1′s Nakia is releasing his next EP, Drown In The Crimson Tide, and is playing a few tour dates in his home state of Texas. His battle round partner Tje Austin put out his new CD, Dreamin’ Big. Also, Paste Magazine wants to help you make your own Cee Lo Green.

Team Christina: Season 3′s Devyn DeLoera released a music video with Ready Revolution that you can find here, along with several covers on her Facebook page. She has new music coming your way on March 4. The busiest Voice alum by far is Season 2′s Chris Mann, who recently taped Chris Mann in Concert for PBS to be aired in March. Also next month, Chris will be announcing tour dates, one of which is New York’s Highline Ballroom. Lindsey Pavao put out her new single “No Revelation.” Moses Stone released new music; you can find “Beautiful Nightmare” here.

Season 4 of The Voice begins March 25. For the latest on all things related to NBC’s hit singing competition, you can visit Big Red Chairs.

January News Roundup

Howdy, The Voice fans! You might have noticed things got a little quiet around here in January, and for that I apologize. As some of you know, I work as a full-time TV reporter, which means I had to go off and cover all the new shows coming out this month. On top of that, I got sick. So, I’ve condensed all the news from January into this one handy post.

Here’s some of the important stuff that happened this month:

  • We learned who some of the mentors are for Season 4 of The Voice. Team Blake has Sheryl Crow (good choice, but will she be as funny as Michael Buble?!). Team Shakira has Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden (who is also a coach on The Voice Australia). Team Usher has Pharrell Williams. Team Adam, we’re looking in your direction…
  • Season 3 winner Cassadee Pope officially signed her record deal with Universal, and gave us a video update on what she’s been doing – find that here.
  • Blake Shelton put out a new single, “Sure Be Cool If You Did,” and announced spring tour dates. Go here for all your Blake info.
  • Pip‘s EP No Formalities is now available on iTunes, and Tje Austin has released his new album, Dreamin’ Big. Still to come is Tim Mahoney‘s new album, Shine Through. Stay tuned for reviews of all three coming this weekend!
  • Mathai is working on her new EP, tentatively set to release in February. Stay tuned…
  • Terry McDermott posted a cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and some of his original music on SoundCloud.
  • Adam Levine hosted Saturday Night Live. You can find links to almost all the sketches Adam was in, over here.
  • Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera took home some People’s Choice Awards.
  • Katrina Parker launched a Kickstarter effort to fund her next release – go here for that.
  • Kim Yarbrough is busy acting: she’s got a guest spot on the upcoming season of TNT’s Southland and her Nickelodeon pilot was just picked up to series! Congrats, Kim!
  • Lots and lots of tour dates. Be sure to check out the tour calendar to see if your favorite artist is back on the road in January or February.
  • And congratulations to new coach Shakira on the birth of her son Milan!

Is there anything that I missed over the last month? Shoot me a comment and I’ll get it added to the site!

Lots of Updates: Team Cee Lo’s Christmas Album, Lisa Scinta’s Kickstarter, Xenia’s New Single

Thursday is shaping up to be a big day for The Voice fans, as either new music or news about new music is emerging. Here’s what I know so far, and this post will be updated as more develops.

  • Several members of Team Cee Lo, including Season 1′s Vicci Martinez and Season 2′s Jamar Rogers and James Massone, have been spotted in Las Vegas recently. Why? Because they’re appearing on coach Cee Lo Green‘s Christmas album, Cee Lo’s Magic Moment. Cee Lo’s extended an invitation to as many as 20 of his past and present team members to join him on the recording. It comes out at the end of this month; you can pre-order a copy via Amazon. (If you’re counting, that’s two coaches and one artist with a Christmas album this year…it’s a Voice Christmas!)
  • It also came out in a recent Billboard interview that Cee Lo signed his Season 2 finalist Juliet Simms “to a management contract.” It’s not clear what specifically that means, but congrats Juliet!
  • Speaking of coaches, you can also pre-order a deluxe version of Christina Aguilera’s Lotus, which is due out next month.
  • For those of you upset by Tuesday’s editing down of the battle rounds, we’ve found Team Christina’s Lisa Scinta. She has a Kickstarter up to fund a new release effort. Click here to take a look – we can’t get her more airtime on TV, but we can help her get a record made.
  • If you’re not near a WalMart, WalMart.com finally made available Chris Mann‘s Home for Christmas EP. Here’s the item page for you to order yours!
  • Team Blake’s Xenia announced via Facebook that her new single would be available on iTunes today. You can download “Hiding Places” here. Interestingly, it’s copyrighted to Xenia rather than Universal Republic, which unfortunately looks like it confirms our speculation that UMG let her go.

And here’s a new cover video from Team Adam’s Karla Davis:

Big Red Chairs – August 17, 2012: Season 3 Changes, Jamar Rogers, Vicci Martinez, Javier Colon, Pip, Chris Mann

CR: NBC

Welcome to Big Red Chairs, the blog for all of your The Voice needs…this week, with less than a month to go before Season 3, find out about the big changes in store, plus who’s playing where and what your favorites are up to, including Pip, Chris Mann, and more!

Season 3: Format Changes Ahead!

It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience: this past weekend, Voice executive producer Mark Burnett invited select members of the media, including yours truly, to his Malibu home for a beach-backed press conference with himself and the coaches concerning what we can expect from Season 3.

And NBC did follow through on their plan to work the coaches’ chairs into the battle rounds, with a new concept called “the steal.” I’ll let Mr. Burnett explain it to you: “This year there’s much more at stake.  When they have their battles and select one person to stay with them and one person to leave, the other coach[es] can buzz in and steal that person that the coach has sent home,” he said.

In case you’re wondering about the math: he explained that each coach has two steals, and will leave the battle rounds with ten singers. They will then move into a new round called “the knockouts,” where they’ll whittle that number down to five before going into live shows. If you’re keeping score, that means each coach comes into live rounds with five artists, one less than they brought last season.

What are the “knockout” rounds? Again, here’s Mark Burnett to explain: “How it works specifically, they’re on the same set, but they will perform against each other.  They’re all lined up.  They’ve all chosen their songs and rehearsed.  They do not know who they’re singing against.  And the coach will then decide who are the two who are in the knockout.  The rest will leave the stage.

“Those two stay on center stage.  One takes a stool in the corner, camera on them, and the other one sings the song of their choice.  They probably don’t even know each other’s songs.” This has a lot of potential, especially as the artists get to choose their songs (presumably off of a cleared list as is the case with live shows), as opposed to even the blind auditions, where a song may be selected for them to sing.

Another change is that rather than having weeks of alternating teams during live shows, in Season 3, “everyone performs every week.” No more waiting for your team to show up!

Here are my thoughts on the revisions: in principle, the steal is a great idea. It should prevent those heartwrenching moments where a good artist goes home (which I refer to as the “Justin Hopkins scenario”). Yet on the other hand, will it provide a false sense of security for the singers? Are we going to get someone who says, ‘Well, it doesn’t matter if I win or lose this battle, because another coach will steal me’? I hope not.

Especially since a steal is not guaranteed. The panel let us know that there have already been circumstances where a losing contestant has not been stolen by another coach, a scenario which Adam described as “Double painful…It’s pretty debilitating when you think about getting let go, someone choosing someone else over you, and then essentially three other people also kind of not necessarily wanting to take you. That’s just like getting kicked in the balls and punched in the face at the same time.” Thanks for that mental image, Adam.

And then there’s the thought I’ve had since last season: I don’t want the show to add so many things or get so big that it gets too far away from what makes it special.  Yet as I always say, you never know for sure until it actually happens.

Burnett also semi-addressed the fears of new coaches, in the sense that nothing’s been truly decided yet so he couldn’t give us concrete information, but they’re aware that their current foursome have day jobs. “Here’s the fact we decided:  When you’ve been on this show, that’s your chair for life,” he told us. “So if they have to tour and someone comes in for a season and then goes out for a season, comes back for a season, there will never be anyone getting replaced ever.  And it will be ‘Well, I need to tour.  Let’s help you find who comes in.  When I’m done on tour, I’ll come back, they’ll go on tour.’” In other words, if a coach ever departs, they’ll always be welcome back whenever their other commitments are through.

But no matter what changes lie ahead, what it comes down to is something very cool that Blake Shelton said that puts it all into perspective, which I want to share with all of you: “We’re doing this for the right reasons.  It actually takes us away from what we ultimately wanted to do with our lives, which is tour and make records.  And so in order to do this, we gotta be doing it for the right reasons, and for something that we all believe in. None of us came to L.A., I think ever in our lives, to be on television. And when this is over, we’ll go right back to doing what it is we really do.” I couldn’t have said it any better, and that’s why this show works so well.

Season 3 of The Voice begins in less than a month: September 10 on NBC.

Tour Dates: Vicci & Jamar at Universal Citywalk Tonight!

If you’re in the Los Angeles area tonight, Team Cee Lo’s Vicci Martinez (Season 1) and Jamar Rogers (Season 2) will be performing at Universal CityWalk’s 5 Towers, the same place where Season 2′s Final Four performed earlier this year. The concert is free and begins at 8 PM sharp when Jamar takes the stage. If you didn’t catch Vicci and Jamar on their West Coast tour, now is your moment, because their concert was pretty epic back in June at Anthology.

Meanwhile, coach Adam Levine has been reunited with Team Adam’s Javier Colon, who’s joined Maroon 5 on their current South American tour. How awesome is that? Check out this picture he posted from the tour’s stop in Monterrey, Mexico.

Getting Music Made: Pip’s New Webseries

With the Pipstarter funded, Team Adam’s Pip is giving us a YouTube-hosted look into the making of his forthcoming album, No Formalities. You can take a look at that here. Also, I think he wins for most adorable Twitter userpic ever.

Chris Mann Is Totally Everywhere

…or at least, it definitely seems like it! Team Christina’s Season 2 finalist has been spotted singing the National Anthem at a recent Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game, popping in for a surprise return to The Voice stage, and most recently performing in Las Vegas. He is very much in high demand. (Sidebar: I know several of Chris’s fans have requested that I do a follow-up interview with him, and rest assured that I haven’t forgotten about you and will bring it to you as soon as I can get it!)

As if that’s not enough, Mann fans get not one but two albums from him this year, as he’ll be putting out a Christmas CD in addition to his anticipated debut album with Faircraft. Circle October 30th on your calendar and stay tuned here as I’ll be posting album reviews ASAP.

That’s all I’ve got for this week; as usual, for up-to-the-minute updates, follow me on Twitter at @bigredchairs.

Big Red Chairs Exclusive: The Vicci Martinez Interview

CR: Brittany Frederick/Digital Airwaves

At her recent San Diego show with Jamar Rogers, the Team Cee Lo finalist from season one of The Voice chatted exclusively with me about her new album, time on the show, and plans for the future.

How’s life been for you now that your album is finally out?

Busy. Now I don’t even know what day it is but that’s okay. (laughs)

What’s the early reception been to the album?

It’s been really good. Right now the album’s being researched and seeing how much work they want to put into it, and it’s been researching really well.  Hopefully we’ll get another big [promotional] push.

One of the things Javier Colon and I talked about was how he got to make the album he really wanted to with Come Through For You. So would you say Vicci is the album you really wanted to make?

I feel like it’s definitely a good uptempo pop album, but at the same time, every song is my life. That’s why I ended up calling it Vicci.

I made this thinking that it was great and that people of all sorts were going to like it. In it, I wanted to write songs with a good melody, a good message and that was the most important to me. I believe in these tracks. If it doesn’t do as good as they want it to do, I gave it my all.

You’re the last of the final four to release an album. Was that ever a concern for you?

I took a risk taking a year to release my record. I was told by the label that they were nervous about that. They wanted to release when Dia [Frampton] and Javier released. I said I wanted to take the time to make a good record.

And you’ve certainly done that. Did you feel the need to re-establish yourself as an artist outside of The Voice? Because unlike some of your colleagues, your music on the show was pretty much like your music on this album.

I’m glad that you noticed that. People expect that you go into this other world and you’re going to be a big old pop diva kind of person. (laughs)  Coming from a reality TV show, you’re considered a reality TV artist, and people just kind of think you just sang good and you went on the show. I’m a good singer, but I’m a musician and I’m a writer, and I’ve been doing it for years before the show. When I got to work on this record, I got to bring [that] to the table, and I’m confident behind it.

A year later, are you still happy that you did the show?

I wouldn’t be in this spot that I’m in at all [without it]. One of my favorite things is the people I’ve met throughout the whole process. I feel like any time I went into a production studio I was a sponge. To have somebody like Max Martin come on board – he’s the executive producer of Maroon 5′s new album, and he came and started working with me for free and because he liked me. He’s a friend. I never would have said a year ago that that would happen. Every little thing that happened brought me to where I am now, and I’m okay with going through the trenches.

What’s in those trenches after this tour? Maybe an eventual day off?

Hopefully not. I have some stuff that I have to do. [I'm] trying to get on a tour opening for somebody. It’s kind of just seeing how everything goes. I can’t wait to do the next [album] and stay in the game.

Have there been any good tour stories?

When we went to Vancouver, Jamar wasn’t able to get through. They kicked us out of our cars to search them and made us stand in the rain. We barely got there on time. But the show was great. It made for a good story.

My thanks to Vicci for this interview! You can follow her on Twitter (@VicciMartinez) and for more information or to order your own copy of her new album, visit her official website VicciMartinez.com.

Big Red Chairs: June 23, 2011 – The “Vicci Martinez and Jamar Rogers” Edition

CR: Brittany Frederick/Digital Airwaves

Welcome to Big Red Chairs, the blog for all your The Voice needs…this week, it’s all Team Cee Lo as I’m priveleged to bring you backstage on Vicci Martinez and Jamar Rogers‘ West Coast tour, complete with exclusive interviews and a review of their new music: Vicci’s self-titled album and Jamar’s new single.

Concert Review

Vicci and Jamar visited one of my favorite concert venues, Anthology San Diego, on Thursday night. It’s a very Voice-friendly place that’s previously hosted Beverly McClellan and Javier Colon, and will be home to Tony Lucca and Justin Hopkins in October. If you’re in the Southern California area and haven’t been there, definitely make plans to visit, if only to give them some love for their support of our Voice artists!

It was the first trip to San Diego for both Vicci and Jamar, and it was definitely an evening to remember! Their interactions showed a chemistry as if they had been on the same team.

In a sense, perhaps they are, because they are very similar artists. It’s not necessarily in their style of music; Vicci is a rocker while Jamar employs hints of electronica in his songs. But they both performed material with substance and meaning behind it, and their performances were some of the most emotional this reviewer has ever seen in concert. Both of them clearly make music for some purpose other than just creating an entertaining or commercially viable sound.

Jamar appeared visibly affected as he sang his original song “High,” which he wrote during a difficult period in his life. Vicci led the audience in singing along with “Touch That Fire,” a song significant to her that was overlooked by a previous record label that made it onto her new release. Not only did the crowd get to hear good music from the two artists over a two-hour set, but they were treated to an understanding of the stories, both the highs and lows, that made them who they are today.

This is what makes a concert worth going to. It’s not necessarily the sound of the music – although it sounded fantastic; Jamar filled in wonderfully for Cee Lo on Vicci’s lead single “Come Along” – but it’s the experience, the things that you can’t capture with a CD or iTunes download. It’s about sharing something with the artists and fellow fans. The audience heard their positive messages and got to know them better than they may have from The Voice.

It was everything one could have asked for from a live music experience. At the end of the evening, the standing applause was well deserved.

Backstage Interviews

Before the show, I had the opportunity to chat with both Jamar and Vicci about the tour, their artistic outlook for the future, and if time away from The Voice made them view the show any differently. You can click here to read my interview with Vicci and here to read my interview with Jamar (or just scroll up, really).

Album and Single Review

Have you all bought Vicci’s new album Vicci yet? Or Jamar’s new single “Where Would I Be Without You”? Well, if you somehow haven’t, you should.

There are so many things to love about both releases. Firstly, as mentioned above, both Vicci and Jamar create music that has a message – and a positive one at that. Both of them have been through a lot, and they’re not just writing empty lyrics or lamenting their difficulties. They’re trying to make a difference in the world and encouraging their audience to do the same. When there’s so much auto-tuned music that doesn’t mean anything these days, that’s a refreshing difference and one that should be applauded.

And there’s no doubt that this is their music. As much as we love The Voice, sometimes there’s a disconnect from hearing one of our contestants do covers and the sound of their own original work. With these releases we get to hear Vicci and Jamar themselves – and in their cases, they’re not different from what we heard on the show at all. Vicci is still rocking with a passion like she did on Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep,” and Jamar’s “Where Would I Be Without You” is reminiscent of the spin he put on The Spinners’ “If You Don’t Know Me By Now.” It’s nice to know that the show didn’t change them or their sound – and if you liked them on the show, you should therefore enjoy their new material.

Both releases are also undeniably catchy. I’d be surprised if you listened to “Where Would I Be Without You” and didn’t get it stuck in your head. Don’t let the electronic arrangement fool you: unlike many other artists who seem to get lost in their sounds and beats, Jamar shows off his talent as a songwriter at the same time. I don’t think you’d ever see him turn out a song that didn’t mean something.

Get the single here. It’s worth noting that Jamar’s fans need to come out in force here, as he’s still unsigned to any label and the more sales/buzz he can get, the more attention he’ll benefit from. So if you liked him on the show, you have a real chance to help him now.

My favorite track on Vicci was also on the Come Along EP: “I Can Love,” which is one of those songs that makes you just want to stand up and sing along. I’ve played it numerous times since its release last month and that hasn’t lessened my enjoyment of it any. All of the songs, however, show that Vicci’s decision to wait to release this album was the right one. Sure, it might have benefited from more attention if it had come out at the same time as Javier Colon and Dia Frampton‘s albums (or maybe not, given the relative lack of promotion Javier’s album got), but you can really grasp the craftsmanship in each piece. The effort and a fair amount of soul-searching is apparent.

Vicci didn’t get a lot of attention for this on The Voice, but she has some real power to her vocals, even if she’s not known as a “belter.” I also love the decision not to include any of the covers that she performed on the show on this album, just as Dia did before her. While we will always love her performances from the show, it’s important to establish (or reinforce) that the show was just one part of her musical career. This album is very representative of Vicci Martinez the musician as well as Vicci Martinez the individual, and it was worth the wait.

Get the album here. (Note: if you previously bought Vicci’s EP Come Along from iTunes, those tracks are on the album and you should be able to download the rest of the album without being charged for the songs you already have.)

June 19 Is Team Cee Lo Day!

CR: NBC

Are you ready, Team Cee Lo fans?! Tomorrow, June 19, is the day that both Vicci Martinez‘s new full-length album Vicci and Jamar Rogers‘ new single “Where Would I Be Without You” arrive!

Both will be available on iTunes. If you haven’t pre-ordered a physical copy of Vicci’s CD already, you can do so here and it’s even autographed! How cool is that?

As you know, Vicci and Jamar are in the middle of a West Coast tour right now. To celebrate their releases, they’ll be performing at Los Angeles’ legendary The Viper Room tomorrow night. You can find more information on that gig at this website.

And, if that’s not enough, June 19 is also the first day of blind auditions for Season 3 of The Voice – which makes it a fitting time for our alumni to be putting out music, doesn’t it? Congratulations, Vicci and Jamar!

Big Red Chairs: June 14, 2012 – Karla Davis, Jermaine Paul, Nathan Parrett, Charlotte Sometimes

CR: NBC

We’re back and better than ever! Welcome to Big Red Chairs, the blog for all your The Voice needs…this week, Team Adam’s Karla Davis debuts her new album 360, and updates on Jermaine Paul, Nathan Parrett, and Charlotte Sometimes.

Editorial Announcement

A little business first: as you may have noticed, BRC the blog (not the website) has moved around quite a bit recently – first from Starpulse (where it was known as Brittany’s The Voice Blog) to elsewhere and back again. Well, no more of that. In an effort to keep the blog in one place, new entries will be hosted right here at BigRedChairs.com. You’ll still be able to find links on the various outlets out there, but if you want to come directly to the updates themselves, bookmark this site.

New Music: Karla Davis, Jermaine Paul, Nathan Parrett & Jesse Macht

The big news this week is that Karla Davis has released her new album, 360. First and foremost, congratulations, Karla!

Here’s my brief album review: honestly, I’m not a country music person, other than owning a few Blake Shelton albums. But, I have played Karla’s cover of B.o.B’s “Airplanes” more times than is healthy. So, I wasn’t necessarily sure how I’d take to the disc, given that it’s music in a genre I don’t listen to but sung by someone I love. Surprise: I adored it. Karla has an earnestness – and a great twang – to her voice that I really enjoy (plus, and this is not to be underestimated, she can enunciate), and she has written some equally heartfelt material here. I might not necessarily connect with the lyrics but I know that she does, and I connect with her.

Title track “Carolina” is catchy, and I still have a soft spot for lead single “Unbroken,” which still holds up despite my having heard it dozens of times by now. You’ll also get “Mississippi Thing,” which Karla released on YouTube a little while ago, and the touching “Black & Blue.” All eleven tracks, though, are easy on the ears; this is an album meant to be enjoyed with your headphones in, sitting out on your porch, just relaxing and letting the music roll over you. This is the musical equivalent of comfort food. If you haven’t given Karla a listen beyond what you heard on The Voice, you’ve missed out.

You can get your own copy of 360 through Karla’s official website.

Season 2 winner Jermaine Paul has also released his first post-Voice track: a cover of Bob Carlisle’s “Butterfly Kisses.” You can pick that up via iTunes now – although I’m more excited to see what wholly original material Jermaine will come up with!

And my friend Nathan Parrett, of Team Adam Season 2, has released another YouTube cover – this one of Nina Simone’s “Do I Move You.” Give this a listen by clicking here; am I the only one who can’t wait for Nathan to come out with an album?!

Speaking of friends, there’s someone I want all my The Voice fans to give a listen to. You may have heard me mention my friend Jesse Macht, who recently opened for Orlando Napier. Well, Jesse is releasing some samples from his upcoming album, Acts of Providence, and I would really love for all of you to go and give him a listen. Here’s a link to my favorite track, “Once In A Lifetime.” You can also find links to other samples there as well – and check out his website at JesseMachtMusic.com.

Getting Music Made: Charlotte Sometimes & Pip

Add Team Blake’s Charlotte Sometimes to the list of Voice artists turning to crowd funding to get a post-show release made. She’s pulling together fans to help her put out her new EP, Circus Head. You can click on over to PledgeMusic to get the details and help Charlotte out. Right now, she’s at 44% of her goal!

On the other end of the spectrum, we’re down to the final days for Pip’s Pipstarter, and he’s still a little short. $7, 266 to be exact. Click over here before 2 PM EDT June 17 to help him reach his target. Remember, there’s no such thing as partial credit with these crowd funding efforts – if Pip doesn’t reach his target, he won’t get any of the funding that’s already been pledged, either. Let’s have a ninth-inning rally! ETA: You did it! As of this morning, Pip has just passed his target! Congrats, Pipsters!

Tour Updates: Vicci Martinez & Jamar Rogers, Tony Lucca Records With Nicolle Galyon

As previously mentioned, Team Cee Lo alums Vicci Martinez and Jamar Rogers are hitting the road together for a West Coast tour. Courtesy of Jamar himself, here’s video from rehearsal. For tour dates, be sure to visit the folks at JamarsFam.com, who have you totally covered.

Remember, Vicci’s album and Jamar’s single both drop on June 19, so be sure to pick them up. This is particularly crucial in Jamar’s case, as he hasn’t been signed to a label yet (baffling right?), so the more noise his single makes on iTunes, the more labels will pay attention. And there will be some stiff competition, as one of my Twitter followers pointed out that June 19 is the same day Justin Bieber’s new album arrives…so let’s really come out and support Vicci and Jamar as much as possible!

Meanwhile, Team Adam’s Nicolle Galyon tweeted yesterday that teammate Tony Lucca was in the studio with her. How fantastic is that? And in other miscellaneous news, Adam Levine and Maroon 5 are on the cover of the magazine Music Connection, which can be found at your local Guitar Center.

Show News: Season 3 Begins In Less Than A Week…

Yep, you read that right. Blind auditions for Season 3 of The Voice begin shooting on June 19 (that’s this coming Tuesday) and continue through Friday. No idea on a specific air date, though Carson Daly has tweeted that he believes it’s September 10. The coaches and Carson just shot their first Season 3 photos yesterday as well.

As a result, the casting call has gone out for Season 4 auditions, which begin in July 2012 on the East Coast and end on the West Coast in mid-August 2012. You can find out more by visiting the official casting site at NBCTheVoice.com.

That’s all I’ve got for this week; as usual, for up-to-the-minute updates, follow me on Twitter at @bigredchairs.
